About Gitte

Gitte is a graphical Git client built for the GNOME desktop with GTK4 and libadwaita, written in Rust. Its author describes it as heavily inspired by Tower and Magit, and it covers most of what those tools do: a commit graph with search across branches, a coloured diff viewer, staging, stashes with their own diffs, and interactive rebase where you squash, reorder by drag and drop, reword or drop commits. Branch work includes upstream tracking with ahead and behind counts, merges with a choice of strategy, tags, pull and push options, and an auto-fetch timer. It handles SSH keys and commit signing through the host's agents. Gitte is free under the AGPL and is mainly distributed for Linux on Flathub. There is also a FreeBSD package and a separately built macOS app. It is a young project, so expect frequent releases and some rough edges compared with long-established clients.

Best for: GNOME users who want a native, Tower-style Git GUI that's free and open source.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Native GTK4/libadwaita interface that fits the GNOME desktop
  • Interactive rebase with drag-and-drop reordering, squash and reword
  • Free and open source under the AGPL
  • Keyboard shortcuts for fetch, pull, push and stash

Why people leave

  • Young project started in 2026, with less real-world testing than older clients
  • No Windows version
  • The macOS build comes from a separate project rather than the main repository
