About Google One

Google One is the paid upgrade for the storage that comes with every Google account. Each account starts with 15 GB shared between Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos; a Google One plan raises that pool and lets you share it with up to five other people, each keeping their own private space. The same subscription also handles phone backups of photos, contacts and other data, and includes a storage manager for finding large files and clearing space. Higher tiers are now sold as Google AI plans that bundle more Gemini usage, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, and extras such as YouTube Premium Lite alongside several terabytes of storage. It suits people who already live in Google's apps and mainly want more room for photos and mail without moving anywhere else. It is a subscription rather than a separate drive app: files are still managed in Drive and Photos, on the web, Android, iOS, and through Drive for desktop on Windows and Mac. Pricing is monthly or annual and varies by country.

Best for: Google users who need more space for Photos, Gmail and Drive, or want to share storage with family.

Pros and cons

What works

  • One storage pool covers Drive, Gmail and Google Photos
  • Storage can be shared with up to five other people
  • Automatic phone backup of photos, contacts and more
  • Higher tiers bundle Gemini AI features and other Google perks

Why people leave

  • Only useful inside Google's own apps; it isn't a standalone sync tool
  • No end-to-end encryption for stored files
  • Plan names and bundles have shifted toward AI tiers, which can be confusing
