About Nextcloud

Nextcloud is an open-source platform you run on your own server, a NAS or a hosting provider. Its core is Nextcloud Files, with desktop and mobile sync clients, sharing links and versioning, and an app store adds calendars, contacts, Talk video calls, an online office suite (Collabora, OnlyOffice or Euro-Office), photo management and much more. Because you control where it runs, it is popular with governments, universities and privacy-minded households that want data to stay in a particular country or on hardware they own. The software is free to self-host; Nextcloud GmbH sells Enterprise subscriptions with support, and many providers offer hosted accounts. Clients run on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. The cost is maintenance: someone has to install updates, keep backups and tune performance, and large installs can feel slower than Google Drive or Dropbox.

Best for: Organisations and tinkerers who want Google Drive features on their own server.
