About Mend.io
Mend.io, formerly WhiteSource, is an application security platform best known for software composition analysis: it finds known vulnerabilities and licence problems in the open-source packages and container images your code depends on, and ranks them by whether the vulnerable code is actually reachable. It also includes static analysis of your own source code, scanning of AI-generated code, SBOM generation and licence compliance reports, and a newer Mend AI product that inventories models and prompts and red-teams AI features. Mend maintains Renovate, the widely used open-source tool that opens pull requests to update dependencies, and sells an enterprise version of it. It plugs into GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure Repos and has a CLI for pipelines. Pricing is per contributing developer per year, with no charges for code size or scan counts. It runs as a cloud service. It suits companies with many repositories that need dependency risk and licence compliance under control.
Best for: Security and platform teams managing open-source risk and licences across many repositories.

Pros and cons
What works
- Reachability analysis cuts noise from unexploitable vulnerabilities
- Covers SCA, SAST, containers and AI components in one platform
- Backed by Renovate for automated dependency updates
- Pricing per developer, not per scan or code size
Why people leave
- Paid only, with no free tier for the AppSec platform
- Priced for organisations; costly for small teams
- Its static analysis is less established than its dependency scanning
