About Microsoft SharePoint

SharePoint is Microsoft's platform for intranets, team sites and document libraries. Organisations use communication sites as their company intranet, team sites for department documents and pages, and hub sites to tie them together with shared navigation. Behind the scenes it is also where files shared in Microsoft Teams live, which means many companies already run on it without thinking of it as a wiki. Pages support news posts, web parts, lists and embedded Office documents, and it plugs into Power Automate, Microsoft Search and Copilot. SharePoint in Microsoft 365 comes bundled with most business and enterprise Microsoft 365 subscriptions, and a separate SharePoint Server product still exists for on-premises deployments. Its strengths are permissions, compliance and the tie-in with the rest of Microsoft 365. Its weaknesses are a page editor that feels clunky for quick documentation, sprawling sites without governance, and admin complexity. It runs in the browser with iOS and Android apps.

Best for: Organisations on Microsoft 365 that need an intranet and permissioned document sites.
