About Outline

Outline is a knowledge base and wiki for teams, with a quick Markdown-friendly editor, slash commands, real-time collaboration and nested collections of documents. Search is fast, and AI question answering can reply with information from the workspace. It integrates with Slack for search and sharing, embeds tools like Figma and Loom, and has an open API, webhooks and a built-in MCP server so AI assistants can read and edit docs. The source code is public, so companies can run it themselves: the self-hosted Community Edition is free with no support, while paid on-premises editions add support and enterprise features. Note that Outline's source is published under a source-available licence rather than a classic open-source one, and its own hosting guide says production installs need dev-ops experience. The hosted cloud version is priced by workspace size with a free trial. It runs in the browser, with desktop apps and an RTL-capable interface translated into many languages.

Best for: Teams that want a modern wiki with the option to host it themselves.
