About OpenClaw

OpenClaw is an open-source personal AI agent that runs on your own computer or server instead of in a vendor's cloud. You chat with it through messaging apps you already use, such as WhatsApp, Telegram or Discord, and it can act for you: sorting email, sending messages, managing a calendar or checking in for flights through skills and integrations. It keeps persistent memory and lets you choose which language model it uses, either through API keys or by signing in with an existing AI subscription. There are desktop apps for macOS, Windows and Linux, plus a one-line installer and an npm package for servers. The project itself has no subscription and no hosted tier, and it is stewarded by an independent nonprofit; what you pay depends on the model you plug in. Because it can send email and act on your accounts, it needs careful setup and permissions, and it suits technical users more than a polished consumer chatbot does.

Best for: Technical users who want a self-run AI agent that acts on their accounts from a chat app.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Runs on your own machine, so memories and data stay under your control
  • Works from existing chat apps instead of a separate chat window
  • Model-agnostic: bring an API key or sign in with an existing subscription
  • Large, very active open-source community and skill ecosystem

Why people leave

  • Giving an agent access to email and accounts carries real security risk
  • Setup and updates are more involved than signing up for a hosted chatbot
  • Model costs are separate and can add up with heavy agent use
