About OpenHands

OpenHands, formerly OpenDevin, is an open-source platform for autonomous software engineering agents. Its own agent can explore a repository, write and run code, use a browser and open pull requests, and its Agent Canvas client can also orchestrate other agents such as Claude Code, Codex and Gemini CLI. You can run it on your laptop, move execution to a shared VM or cloud sandboxes when tasks get heavy, and set up automations triggered by events in your tools. It works with closed models and open-weight models, including local ones, with your own API keys. The core is MIT-licensed and free to self-host; a paid Teams tier adds multi-user identity and access control, and Enterprise covers VPC or on-premises deployment with support. It's maintained by All Hands AI and has a large research and contributor community. It suits teams that want agent automation they can inspect, self-host and adapt.

Best for: Teams that want self-hostable autonomous agents and the freedom to use any model.

Pros and cons

What works

  • MIT-licensed and free to self-host
  • Can orchestrate other agents, not just its own
  • Works with open-weight and local models

Why people leave

  • More setup than a hosted agent
  • Multi-user features need the paid Teams tier
  • Results depend heavily on the model you connect
