About Paystack

Paystack is a payment gateway built for businesses in Africa, letting them accept cards, bank transfers, direct debit and mobile money such as M-PESA through a website checkout, payment links, invoices or an in-person terminal. It operates in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Côte d'Ivoire and Egypt, and also handles transfers to bank accounts, subscriptions and identity checks for developers. Founded in Lagos, it was bought by Stripe in 2020 but still runs as its own product with its own dashboard and API. There's no monthly fee: pricing is a percentage per transaction that varies by country and payment method, with local rates in Nigeria capped per transaction, and international cards cost more. Businesses can absorb fees or pass them to customers. Developers get well-documented APIs and plugins for common store builders. The dashboard is web-based, and its help centre is available in English and French.

Best for: Businesses in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa or Egypt taking local payments online.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Supports local methods like bank transfer and M-PESA, not just cards
  • No monthly fee, only per-transaction charges
  • Nigerian local fees are capped per transaction
  • Developer-friendly APIs backed by Stripe

Why people leave

  • Only for businesses registered in its six African markets
  • International card payments cost noticeably more than local ones
  • Automatic fee pass-through from the dashboard is limited to Nigerian businesses
