About Poedit

Poedit is a desktop editor for translating software and websites file by file. It started as a gettext (PO) editor and still handles that format best, which makes it a common pick for WordPress, Drupal, Django and Linux projects, but it also opens XLIFF, JSON, Qt and Flutter translation files. You get a two-pane list of source strings and translations, validation checks for things like broken placeholders, and the ability to update a catalog from source code so new strings show up. It can also connect to Crowdin or Localazy projects and translate them from the app. The base app is free and its open-source core is MIT licensed. A paid Pro edition adds pre-translation with machine translation engines, translation memory suggestions, Excel import and export, Twig and Blade template support, and a WordPress mode that can translate themes and plugins directly, even over FTP. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. It's a single-user tool rather than a team platform, so larger localization teams usually pair it with, or replace it by, a cloud TMS.

Best for: Developers and translators editing PO files locally, especially for WordPress themes and plugins.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Free, MIT-licensed core with a clean desktop editor
  • Deep gettext support, including updating catalogs from source code
  • Pro edition translates WordPress themes and plugins in place
  • Can open Crowdin and Localazy projects directly

Why people leave

  • Machine pre-translation and translation memory need the paid Pro edition
  • Built for one translator at a time, not team review workflows
  • Linux build is distributed as a snap package
