About Proofpoint
Proofpoint is one of the largest vendors of email security for businesses. Its Core Email Protection product scans inbound, outbound and internal mail for phishing, business email compromise, malicious links and attachments, and can be deployed either as a secure email gateway that sits in front of your mail server or through an API connection to Microsoft 365. Suspicious attachments and URLs are detonated in a sandbox, and detections can be viewed inside the Microsoft 365 console. Around that core it sells DMARC and domain fraud tools, data loss prevention, security awareness training and archiving, so large organisations often buy several modules together. It is aimed at mid-size and enterprise companies, government and education rather than individuals. Pricing is by quote through sales or resellers, and there is no self-serve plan. It runs as a cloud service, so there is nothing to install on user devices.
Best for: Large organisations that want gateway or API email protection plus DLP and training from one vendor.
Pros and cons
What works

- Broad suite: DMARC, DLP, awareness training and archiving
Why people leave
- Quote-only pricing with no self-serve plan
- Built for enterprises; heavy for very small businesses
- Many features are split across separately sold modules
