About Retcon

Retcon is a focused macOS app for editing Git history rather than a general-purpose client. You move, fixup, delete, reword or edit commits by dragging and typing directly in the commit list, and the result appears immediately without the stash-rebase-pop dance a conventional workflow needs. Conflicts do not block you: you can keep making changes and resolve conflicts at the end. Every rewrite can be undone with Cmd+Z, and there is a built-in sandbox for practising. Retcon is built on GitUpKit, the toolkit behind GitUp, but is a separate, independently developed product. It is sold as a monthly or yearly subscription for one user on up to three Macs, with a fully featured 14-day trial and an education and non-profit discount; when a subscription lapses the app becomes read-only rather than locking your repos. It needs a recent macOS. People usually pair it with another client or the terminal for everyday pushing and pulling.

Best for: Mac developers who clean up commits before review and find interactive rebase tedious.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Rewording, reordering and squashing take seconds
  • Undo for every rewrite, and conflicts never block you
  • Read-only access continues after a subscription lapses

Why people leave

  • macOS only
  • Subscription for a fairly narrow tool
  • Not a full replacement for an everyday Git client
