About Znuny
Znuny is an open-source, web-based ticketing system for customer service, help desks and IT service management. It began as a fork of the ((OTRS)) Community Edition after OTRS stopped publishing it, and it gives former OTRS users a free path forward: a long-term-support line keeps the 6.x branch patched, while newer versions add features such as SAML login and optional self-hosted AI summaries. It runs on your own Linux server, is written in Perl, and is licensed under the GPL, so there are no per-agent fees. The company behind it, Znuny GmbH, sells professional services such as support contracts, hosting and migration help for organisations that want a vendor behind their install. It fits teams that liked OTRS's queue-based workflow and deep configuration but want to keep their data on their own servers without a commercial licence.
Best for: Teams migrating from OTRS Community Edition or wanting a free, self-hosted ITSM ticket system.
Pros and cons
What works
- Free and GPL-licensed with no per-agent fees
- Straightforward migration path for old OTRS installs
- Long-term-support releases alongside a feature branch
Why people leave
- You have to run and maintain the Linux server yourself unless you pay for services
- Interface looks dated next to newer cloud help desks
- Configuration is complex, much like OTRS
