Membership warehouse club selling groceries and goods in bulk, in stores and online.

Paid

The short answer

Amazon suits people who want almost any product delivered quickly, with Prime as an optional membership for free fast shipping and streaming. Costco suits households and small businesses near a warehouse that buy groceries and essentials in bulk. The biggest difference: Amazon is free to shop and sells nearly everything online, while Costco needs a paid membership and rewards buying in quantity.

Amazon or Costco: our take

Amazon is an online store first. Anyone can shop for free, and it sells almost every category from its own stock and from a large marketplace of third-party sellers. Prime is the paid add-on: fast free delivery on eligible items, Prime Video, music and unlimited photo storage. In the US it costs $14.99 a month or $139 a year, with a 30-day free trial and cheaper plans for young adults and people on government assistance. The trade-offs are search results crowded with sponsored listings and lookalike brands, and uneven quality from some marketplace sellers.

Costco is a membership warehouse club. You pay an annual fee to shop its warehouses, which sell groceries, household goods, electronics and its Kirkland Signature own brand in bulk at low markups. The Executive membership costs $130 a year and returns a 2% reward on most purchases, up to $1,250 a year. Costco.com and the app sell a wider range, including furniture and big-ticket items, and link to same-day grocery delivery through Instacart; non-members can buy some items online but pay a 5% surcharge. Membership also covers Costco Travel, the pharmacy, optical and tyre services, and the card works at Costco warehouses worldwide.

In practice they solve different shopping problems. Amazon wins on selection, convenience and delivery to the door, and it makes sense for people who buy many different things in small quantities or don't live near a warehouse. Costco wins on unit prices for staples bought in volume, but its pack sizes don't suit one- or two-person households, and most of the value depends on visiting a warehouse.

Many families use both: Costco for a regular bulk grocery and household run, Amazon for everything else. If only one membership makes sense, choose Costco when large weekly grocery spending can earn back the fee, and Amazon Prime when frequent small orders and streaming matter more.

About each app

What is Amazon?

Amazon is the biggest online retailer in the US and many other countries, with separate stores such as amazon.com, amazon.co.uk, amazon.de and amazon.in. It sells almost every category of goods, from books, where it started, to electronics, groceries, clothing, household supplies and car parts, both from its own stock and from a large marketplace of third-party sellers, many of whom use Amazon's warehouses and delivery network. Shopping is free; Prime is the paid membership that adds fast free shipping on eligible items, Prime Video, music, photo storage and other perks, and its price differs by country. Amazon is known for quick delivery, an easy return process on most items and a very large review base. Downsides include search results crowded with sponsored listings and lookalike products, and uneven quality from some marketplace sellers. It runs on the web and in Android and iOS apps.

What is Costco?

Costco is a membership warehouse club with stores across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Members pay an annual fee to shop its warehouses, which sell groceries, household goods, electronics, appliances and its Kirkland Signature own brand in bulk at low markups. Costco.com and the app sell a wider online range, including furniture and big-ticket items; non-members can buy some items online but pay more. The app also holds a digital membership card, shows warehouse hours and gas prices, and links to same-day grocery delivery through Instacart. Two consumer tiers exist: the basic Gold Star membership, and Executive, which costs more and returns an annual 2% reward on most purchases. Membership also unlocks Costco Travel, the pharmacy, optical and tyre services. Costco suits households and small businesses that buy in quantity and live near a warehouse. People who shop for one or two, or rarely visit a store, often get better value from a free retailer like Walmart, Target or Amazon.
