The short answer

Both come from Microsoft and share a catalogue of 1,400+ connectors, but they target different people. Azure Logic Apps is for developers and integration teams building enterprise workflows, B2B/EDI and BizTalk migrations on Azure. Power Automate is for Microsoft 365 organisations automating approvals, documents and Windows desktop tasks. The biggest difference is audience: integration engineering versus business process automation.

Azure Logic Apps or Microsoft Power Automate: our take

Logic Apps is an Azure integration service. Workflows are designed visually, and when connectors aren't enough you can drop into inline JavaScript, C# or PowerShell or call Azure Functions. It supports B2B messaging over AS2, EDIFACT, X12 and RosettaNet, and works with BizTalk Server in both directions, making it Microsoft's main path off BizTalk. Power Automate sits in the Power Platform beside Power Apps and Power BI. Its cloud flows connect Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, Dynamics 365 and third-party apps, and desktop flows record and replay actions in Windows applications and websites, which is Microsoft's robotic process automation. It also includes process mining and Copilot features.

Pricing follows the audience. Logic Apps needs an Azure subscription and offers two hosting models: Consumption, billed per execution and suited to low-volume workflows, and Standard, a single-tenant option with more control. Power Automate is licensed per user or per bot: Premium is $15 per user/month (paid yearly) and the Process license is $150 per bot/month (paid yearly), with a 30-day free trial. Many organisations already have basic rights for standard connectors through Microsoft 365, but premium connectors cost extra and licensing is hard to estimate.

For reaching internal systems, Logic Apps connects to on-premises platforms such as SAP and IBM MQ, while Power Automate stays cloud-only and uses an on-premises data gateway.

Choose Logic Apps if you are an integration or development team on Azure handling system-to-system flows, EDI or a BizTalk migration. Choose Power Automate if business users in a Microsoft 365 organisation need approvals, document workflows or Windows desktop automation without Azure expertise.

Which should you pick?

Choose Azure Logic Apps if…

  • Integration teams on Azure who need enterprise workflows, B2B/EDI or a path off BizTalk
  • Very large connector catalogue, including on-premises systems
  • Visual designer with inline code when needed

Choose Microsoft Power Automate if…

  • Organisations on Microsoft 365 automating approvals, documents and Windows tasks
  • You need Windows, iOS and Android, which Azure Logic Apps doesn't list
  • Deep integration with Microsoft 365 and Dynamics
  • Desktop RPA for Windows apps included in paid plans

About each app

What is Azure Logic Apps?

Azure Logic Apps is Microsoft's cloud integration service for building workflows that connect apps, data and systems. You design workflows in a visual designer and pick from a large catalogue of prebuilt connectors for Azure, Microsoft 365, SaaS apps, databases and on-premises systems such as SAP and IBM MQ, and you can drop into inline JavaScript, C# or PowerShell, or call Azure Functions, when connectors aren't enough. It supports enterprise B2B messaging with AS2, X12 and EDIFACT, and it can talk to BizTalk Server in both directions, which makes it Microsoft's main path off BizTalk. There are two hosting models: Consumption, a pay-per-execution multitenant option, and Standard, a single-tenant option with more control that can also run in other environments. It is aimed at developers and integration teams already on Azure, rather than at non-technical users building quick personal automations.

What is Microsoft Power Automate?

Power Automate is Microsoft's automation service, part of the Power Platform alongside Power Apps and Power BI. Cloud flows connect services such as Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, Dynamics 365 and many third-party apps, triggered by events, schedules or buttons, while desktop flows record and replay actions in Windows applications and websites, which is Microsoft's take on robotic process automation. It also includes process mining and AI features through Copilot. Many organisations already have basic Power Automate rights through Microsoft 365 licences for standard connectors, and premium connectors, desktop RPA and unattended bots need paid per-user or per-bot licences. It is a cloud service, but an on-premises data gateway lets flows reach internal systems. The builder is capable, though licensing is notoriously confusing and the experience is best inside the Microsoft ecosystem. Power Automate for desktop runs on Windows 10 and 11, and the cloud designer runs in the browser with mobile apps for approvals and buttons.
