Datadog vs Grafana
Updated October 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

Datadog
A broad SaaS observability platform covering infrastructure metrics, APM, logs, synthetics and security.

Grafana
Open-source dashboards for metrics, logs and traces, with a hosted Grafana Cloud stack.
The short answer
Datadog suits teams that want an all-in-one hosted product that works with little setup and can pay for it; Grafana suits teams that want flexible, open-source dashboards over data they already collect, self-hosted or in Grafana Cloud. The biggest difference is approach: Datadog is a single proprietary SaaS, Grafana is an open stack you can assemble and run yourself.
Datadog or Grafana: our take
Datadog is a complete hosted suite. Its agent collects metrics, traces and logs from hosts and containers, more than 1,000 integrations cover most cloud services and frameworks, and everything is linked in one interface with dashboards, monitors, APM, synthetics, incident management and security tools. There is no self-hosted option. Grafana started as a dashboard tool that connects to data sources such as Prometheus, Loki, Elasticsearch, InfluxDB and SQL databases, and Grafana Labs now builds the rest of a stack around it: Loki for logs, Tempo for traces, Mimir for metrics, Pyroscope for profiling and k6 for load testing.
The licensing and hosting models differ sharply. Grafana and its companion projects are open source under AGPL-3.0 and can be self-hosted for free, or run for you in Grafana Cloud. Datadog is proprietary SaaS only. Self-hosting Grafana avoids lock-in and licence costs, but running Loki, Tempo and Mimir at scale is real operational work, and building good dashboards takes query knowledge.
On price, Datadog bills per product: Infrastructure Pro starts at $15 per host per month on annual billing, its free tier covers up to 5 hosts with 1-day metric retention, and there is a 14-day trial. Costs grow with custom metrics and log volume. Grafana Cloud's free tier includes 10k metric series and 50 GB of logs per month with 14-day retention, and the Pro plan starts at $19/month plus usage, with several meters to track.
Choose Datadog if you want the fastest path to broad coverage with little in-house effort and have the budget. Choose Grafana if you already use Prometheus or similar tools, want to avoid vendor lock-in, or have the skills to run your own stack, using Grafana Cloud when you would rather not operate it.
Which should you pick?
Choose Datadog if…
- Cloud-heavy teams that want metrics, traces, logs and alerts in one hosted product and can budget for it
- You need iOS and Android, which Grafana doesn't list
- Very wide integration catalogue that works with little setup
- Metrics, traces and logs are linked in one interface
Choose Grafana if…
- Teams that want flexible dashboards over many data sources, self-hosted or as a managed cloud
- You want open-source software
- You need to host it on your own servers
- You need Self-hosted, which Datadog doesn't list
- Connects to almost any metrics, logs or SQL data source
About each app
What is Datadog?
Datadog is the hosted observability suite many cloud-native companies end up on. An agent on each host or container ships metrics, traces and logs to one place, and from there you get dashboards, alerting, APM, real user monitoring, synthetic checks, database monitoring, incident management and a security product line. Its biggest strength is coverage: more than a thousand integrations mean most cloud services, databases and frameworks report useful data within minutes of setup. The weakness is the bill. Each product is priced separately, by host, by GB of logs, by custom metric or by test run, so costs are hard to predict and tend to climb as teams turn more things on. Pricing is per product with annual and on-demand rates; a small free tier covers a handful of hosts with short retention, and there is a free trial. It runs as a web app with mobile apps for alerts, and agents for Linux, Windows, macOS and Kubernetes.
What is Grafana?
Grafana started as a dashboard tool and is now the centre of an open observability stack. Grafana itself connects to dozens of data sources such as Prometheus, Loki, Elasticsearch, InfluxDB and SQL databases and turns them into dashboards and alerts. Grafana Labs also builds Loki for logs, Tempo for traces, Mimir for metrics, Pyroscope for profiling and k6 for load testing. You can self-host all of it for free under the AGPL, or use Grafana Cloud, which runs the stack for you with a free tier and usage-based paid plans. The appeal is flexibility and avoiding lock-in: it works with whatever you already collect. The downside is that running the full stack yourself is real operational work, and stitching the pieces together takes more effort than an all-in-one SaaS. Grafana runs in the browser; the server runs on Linux, Windows, macOS or Kubernetes.
