The short answer

DoorDash is a delivery app built on restaurant orders that has added groceries, convenience, retail, flowers and pet supplies. Instacart is a grocery-first marketplace where a shopper picks your order from familiar stores. Choose DoorDash if takeout is your main use and groceries are occasional; choose Instacart for regular grocery shopping across many chains.

DoorDash or Instacart: our take

Both apps work on the web, iOS and Android, are free to use, and add delivery fees, service fees and an optional tip to each order, which makes small orders noticeably more expensive than shopping or ordering direct. Each sells a membership that cuts delivery fees on larger orders: DashPass for DoorDash and Instacart+ for Instacart. Both offer pickup as an alternative to delivery.

DoorDash started with restaurant delivery and that is still where its coverage is widest in the US. It now also delivers groceries, convenience items from its own DashMart shops, retail, flowers, pet supplies and alcohol in some markets. DashPass gives $0 delivery fees on eligible orders, reduced service fees and also works on Caviar, DoorDash's upscale restaurant app, but savings only apply at participating stores once you meet a minimum. DashPass is offered in the US and Canada, while DoorDash itself also operates in Australia, New Zealand and other countries. It provides 24/7 chat and phone support.

Instacart is built for grocery runs. You pick a store, fill a cart from that store's own range, and a shopper picks and delivers it, often the same day, and you can chat with them to approve substitutions. One account covers supermarket chains, warehouse clubs, pharmacies, pet shops and specialty grocers. Item prices at some stores are marked up compared with in-store, and the service is only available in the US and Canada. Instacart also sells technology to grocers, such as white-label storefronts and the Caper Cart.

If you mostly order meals and want one app for the occasional grocery top-up, DoorDash covers both. If weekly groceries are the point, Instacart's store choice and shopper chat make it the better fit, and some households keep both.

About each app

What is DoorDash?

DoorDash is a delivery marketplace that started with restaurant orders and now also covers groceries, convenience stores and its own DashMart shops, retail, alcohol in some markets, flowers and pet supplies. You order in the app or on the website, a courier (a 'Dasher') brings it, and you can choose pickup instead. Ordering itself is free; you pay menu prices plus delivery and service fees and a tip. The DashPass membership, sold monthly or yearly with a free trial for new members, removes delivery fees and reduces service fees on eligible orders over a minimum, and also works on Caviar, DoorDash's more upscale restaurant app. DoorDash operates in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and several other countries. Like other delivery apps, fees make orders noticeably more expensive than ordering direct, and DashPass savings only kick in at participating stores once you meet their minimum.

What is Instacart?

Instacart connects people with grocery stores and other retailers across the US and Canada. You choose a store in the app or on the website, fill a cart from that store's own range, and a shopper picks the order and brings it to your door, often the same day, or you collect it yourself. One account covers large supermarket chains, warehouse clubs, pharmacies, pet shops and specialty grocers, which is the main reason people use it over a single retailer's app. Using the service is free, but orders carry delivery and service fees plus an optional tip, and item prices at some stores are higher than on the shelf. A paid Instacart+ membership drops delivery fees on larger orders. Behind the consumer app, Instacart also sells technology to grocers: white-label online storefronts, the Caper smart cart for in-store checkout, and an advertising business. It runs on iOS, Android and the web, and is listed on Nasdaq under the ticker CART.
