About AWStats
AWStats is a veteran open-source log file analyzer written in Perl and released under the GNU GPL. It reads web, streaming, FTP or mail server logs and produces graphical HTML reports on visits, unique visitors, pages, hits, bandwidth, referrers, search keywords, browsers, operating systems, robots and errors, with monthly and yearly history. Many shared hosting control panels such as cPanel still include it, so lots of site owners already have it without realising. Because it works from logs, it needs no tracking code and captures traffic that JavaScript-based tools miss. It can run from the command line or as a CGI script. The trade-offs are significant: the interface looks like the early 2000s, reports are coarse compared with modern tools, and the original author has said version 8 is the last he will release himself, with future maintenance left to the community. It is free and runs anywhere Perl does.
Best for: Hosting users who want log-based traffic reports with no tracking code.
