About Celluloid

Celluloid, formerly known as GNOME MPV, is a lightweight video player for Linux that puts a clean GTK interface on top of mpv. It aims to be easy to use while keeping mpv's configurability: it reads mpv's own configuration and input files as-is, so existing keybindings and settings carry over. You get a drag-and-drop playlist, MPRIS support for desktop media controls, and full Wayland support. Because playback is handled by mpv, format support and image quality match mpv's. It is free and open source under the GPLv3, and is available as a Flatpak and in many distribution repositories. It does not aim to compete with feature-heavy players, so expect a short menu rather than dozens of options. It suits Linux users, especially on GNOME-style desktops, who want mpv with a simple window around it.

Best for: Linux users who want mpv's playback with a clean, simple desktop interface.
