About DokuWiki

DokuWiki is a long-running open-source wiki written in PHP. Instead of a database it keeps pages as plain text files on disk, so installing, backing up and moving it is as simple as copying a folder. That makes it popular for small company intranets, IT documentation, project wikis and personal knowledge collections on cheap hosting. Pages use DokuWiki's own wiki markup rather than Markdown, with a toolbar to help, and there are revisions, access control lists, namespaces and full-text search. Hundreds of plugins and templates extend it with things like CAPTCHA, translation, tables and alternative editors, and the download page can bundle a tiny web server for running it from a USB stick. It is free under the GPL v2 with no paid edition. The trade-offs are an older-looking default interface, wiki syntax that newcomers have to learn, and none of the real-time collaboration or AI features that hosted tools now ship.

Best for: Small teams and admins who want a wiki that runs anywhere PHP does, with no database.
