About Google Contacts

Google Contacts is the address book behind a Google Account. Every name, phone number and email address you save there shows up in Gmail, on Android phones and in other Google apps, and it can be opened directly at contacts.google.com in any browser. People you email but never save are kept in a separate "Other contacts" list so they still autocomplete, and that behaviour can be turned off in Gmail settings. Contacts can be sorted with labels, which double as email groups in Gmail, and a Merge & fix view suggests duplicates to combine. Each contact keeps an edit history, and the whole list can be exported as a Google CSV or vCard file when moving to another service. It is free with any Google Account; Workspace users also get a company directory. There is no dedicated desktop app, and on iPhone it works through the built-in Contacts app syncing with the Google account rather than its own app. It suits anyone already living in Gmail and Android.

Best for: Gmail and Android users who want their contacts synced everywhere at no cost.
