About Hanko

Hanko is a German open-source authentication project built around passkeys, with passwords, email passcodes, social sign-in, MFA and SAML SSO as additional options. Its web components drop a complete login and profile UI into any front end, while a back-end API and admin API handle users, sessions and webhooks. A separate passkey API lets teams add passkeys to an existing auth system without replacing it. You can self-host the AGPL-licensed server or use Hanko Cloud, which has a free tier for a decent number of monthly active users, a Pro plan with a small monthly fee plus per-user pricing, and paid SAML connections. A startup program offers far higher free limits for eligible companies. Hanko suits teams that care about privacy and want modern passwordless login, though it is younger and has fewer enterprise features and integrations than the established vendors.

Best for: Privacy-minded teams that want passkey-first login they can self-host.
