About Money Manager Ex

Money Manager Ex (often shortened to MMEX) is a desktop personal finance program for people who want to keep their own records rather than hand bank logins to a cloud service. You create accounts in one or more currencies, enter or import transactions, assign payees and categories, and set up scheduled transactions for recurring bills and income. It also tracks stocks, shares and fixed assets, so the net-worth view covers more than cash. Budgets can be set per month or year and compared against actual spending in the built-in reports, and advanced users can write their own reports with SQL, Lua and HTML. Data lives in a local database file that can be encrypted, and you can keep that file in a cloud folder of your choice to use it on more than one machine. There is no automatic bank sync; imports come from QIF and CSV files. The project is free and open source under the GPL, with desktop builds for Windows, macOS and Linux plus companion mobile apps.

Best for: People who want a free, offline money tracker with budgets and investments and no bank-login cloud..

Pros and cons

What works

  • Free and open source with no ads or subscription
  • Tracks stocks, shares and assets alongside everyday spending
  • Local database file with optional encryption
  • Custom reports with SQL, Lua and HTML for power users

Why people leave

  • No automatic bank connections; imports are QIF or CSV files
  • Desktop interface feels dated next to modern budgeting apps
  • Syncing between devices means managing the database file yourself
