About Snowplow

Snowplow collects behavioural event data from websites, mobile apps, servers and webhooks, checks every event against a schema, enriches it (for example with geolocation, campaign or user-agent data), and loads it into your own warehouse, lake or stream, such as Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift or Kafka. Unlike tools that store data in their own dashboards, Snowplow is built for data teams who want raw, well-structured event data they control, then model it with supplied dbt packages for web, mobile and ecommerce analytics. Newer features include real-time customer profiles (Signals) for personalisation and AI agents, event forwarding to other tools, and a tracking-plan editor. It began as an open-source project, but in 2024 the code moved to the Snowplow Limited Use License, so production use now needs a commercial plan: either a fully managed cloud product or a licensed self-hosted pipeline. Pricing is by quote, based mainly on event volume, after a 14-day free trial.

Best for: Data teams that want validated, raw event data in their own warehouse.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Schema validation catches bad tracking before it reaches the warehouse
  • Data lands in your own warehouse or lake, not a vendor silo
  • More than 20 trackers and webhooks plus ready-made dbt models
  • Can run managed or self-hosted in your own cloud

Why people leave

  • No longer open source for production use; licence is source-available
  • Quote-based pricing with no permanent free tier
  • Needs data engineering skills to model and use the data
