About Spinnaker

Spinnaker is an open-source continuous delivery platform designed for releasing software across many clouds. It models applications, clusters, server groups and load balancers across AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Kubernetes, Cloud Foundry and others, and pipelines orchestrate deployments with built-in strategies like red/black, rolling and canary releases, plus manual judgement stages and automated canary analysis. It came out of Netflix and was developed with Google, and remains in use at large organisations with complex multi-cloud estates. The flip side is weight: Spinnaker is made of many microservices, needs real effort to install, upgrade and operate, and is overkill for teams deploying a handful of services to one Kubernetes cluster, where GitOps tools are now the more common choice. It is free under the Apache 2.0 licence and governed by the Continuous Delivery Foundation, with commercial distributions available. It runs on Kubernetes.

Best for: Large organisations deploying across several clouds that need advanced release strategies.
