About IBM SPSS Statistics

IBM SPSS Statistics is the statistics package many people first meet at university, and it is still widely used in social science, healthcare, market research and government. Most work happens through menus and dialog boxes: you load a dataset into a spreadsheet-like view, pick a test such as a t-test, ANOVA, regression or factor analysis, and get formatted output tables and charts. For repeatable work there is SPSS's own syntax language, plus integration with R and Python. Recent versions add an AI Output Assistant that explains results in plain language. IBM sells it as a subscription with a base plan and add-on bundles for things like custom tables, forecasting, decision trees and complex samples, and it also offers perpetual licences, campus licences for institutions and cheaper student editions through resellers. It runs as a desktop app on Windows and macOS. It is expensive next to free tools like jamovi, JASP or PSPP, but its file format and syntax are a de facto standard in many fields.

Best for: Researchers and organisations that need the standard menu-driven stats tool their field already uses.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Most common tests are a few clicks away, no coding needed
  • Syntax language plus R and Python integration for repeatable analyses
  • Widely taught, so tutorials and colleagues' .sav files are everywhere
  • Perpetual licence available as well as subscriptions

Why people leave

  • Costly compared with free alternatives, and advanced procedures are paid add-ons
  • Desktop-only; no Linux desktop build or browser version
  • Charts and output look dated next to newer tools
