About Origin (OriginLab)

Origin, from OriginLab, is long-standing desktop software for scientific and engineering graphing and analysis, sold in two editions: Origin and OriginPro, which adds more advanced analysis. It is built around workbooks, graphs and projects, with hundreds of graph types, curve and peak fitting, statistics and signal processing. A large catalogue of add-on apps covers specialist imports and analyses, and you can extend it with embedded Python, its own Origin C and LabTalk languages, or connections to MATLAB and R. It imports Excel files directly without Excel installed. Origin is common in university labs and industrial R&D. It is paid software with node-locked, floating and dongle licences, plus academic and student pricing, and a fully functional trial with a 21-day licence. The main program runs on Windows; a free Origin Viewer lets colleagues open project files on Windows or Mac without a licence. Cost and the Windows focus are the usual reasons people look for alternatives.

Best for: Labs and engineers who need a full graphing and analysis suite with vendor support.
