The short answer

Pick Razorpay if your business is registered in India and you want one gateway for UPI, cards, netbanking, EMI and wallets plus payouts. Pick Adyen if you are a large or international merchant that needs online, in-app and in-store payments across many countries on one platform. The biggest difference is scope: Razorpay is built for India, Adyen for global enterprise volume.

Adyen or Razorpay: our take

Both are payment platforms, but they serve different businesses. Adyen, a Dutch company, lets large merchants connect once and accept cards, digital wallets, buy now pay later and 200+ local payment methods in 150+ currencies, with in-store terminals sharing the same data. It also offers risk management, payouts, card issuing and embedded finance, and holds banking licences in the US, UK and EU. Razorpay is one of the most widely used gateways in India: businesses add its checkout to take UPI, cards, netbanking, EMI and wallets, settled to an Indian bank account, with payment links, payment pages, subscriptions, invoices and QR codes. RazorpayX adds payouts, current accounts and corporate cards. Razorpay is an RBI-authorised payment aggregator.

Pricing models differ. Adyen charges a fixed processing fee plus a payment-method fee, with interchange++ for cards; Visa and Mastercard are listed at $0.13 + 0.80% + Interchange++, with no setup or monthly fees. Razorpay's standard plan is 2% + GST per successful transaction, with no setup or annual maintenance charge, a 0% gateway fee for the first 90 days, and custom pricing above ₹5,00,000 monthly revenue. Razorpay's standard fee applies even to UPI payments.

Onboarding also differs. Adyen is sales-led and geared to merchants with significant volume, and it has fewer no-code tools for small businesses. Razorpay suits startups, D2C brands, SaaS companies and freelancers, though activation needs KYC documents and a review. Companies abroad can use Razorpay to collect INR from Indian customers, but it is not a general global processor.

Choose Razorpay if you are an Indian business of almost any size that wants to collect and pay out money from one dashboard. Choose Adyen if you are a larger company selling across many countries, especially with physical stores, and want a single global integration.

About each app

What is Adyen?

Adyen is a Dutch payments company that processes online, mobile and in-person payments for large businesses on a single platform. Instead of stitching together separate gateways and acquirers per country, merchants connect once and accept cards, digital wallets, buy now pay later and many local payment methods worldwide, with in-store terminals sharing the same data. It also offers risk management, authentication, payouts, card issuing and embedded finance for platforms and marketplaces. Pricing is per transaction: a small fixed processing fee plus a payment-method fee, with interchange++ pricing for cards and no setup or monthly fees. Adyen holds banking licences in the US, UK and EU. It is built for enterprises and fast-growing companies with significant volume, and onboarding is sales-led, so very small businesses usually find Stripe or Square easier to start with.

What is Razorpay?

Razorpay is one of the most widely used payment gateways in India. Businesses add its checkout to a website or app and can then take payments by UPI, credit and debit cards, netbanking, EMI and popular wallets, with settlement to an Indian bank account. Beyond the core gateway it offers payment links, payment pages, subscriptions, invoices and QR codes, plus RazorpayX for payouts, current accounts and corporate cards. Pricing is pay-as-you-go: a percentage fee on each successful transaction, with no setup or annual maintenance charge on the standard plan, and custom rates for larger volumes. It suits Indian startups, D2C brands, SaaS companies and freelancers who want one account for collecting money and paying it out. It is built mainly for businesses registered in India; companies abroad can use it to collect INR from Indian customers, but it is not a global processor in the way Stripe is. Everything is managed from a web dashboard and mobile apps, with APIs and plugins for common store platforms.
