About Twilio Authy

Authy, owned by communications company Twilio, became popular because it solved the lost-phone problem early: codes are backed up to Twilio's cloud, encrypted with a backup password that Twilio never receives, and can be synced to several phones and tablets. Accounts are registered to your phone number, which is used to recover access on a new device. It generates standard TOTP codes for any site and supports app protection with PIN or biometrics. The app is free. Twilio retired the Authy desktop apps in 2024, so it now runs only on Android and iOS, and it has never offered a way to export your codes, which makes leaving it tedious: you generally have to re-enrol each account in a new app. A 2024 incident in which phone numbers linked to Authy accounts were exposed also raised privacy concerns. It still works well for people who value automatic backups, but many now prefer apps with export and no phone number requirement.

Best for: People who want automatic encrypted backup across phones and do not mind phone-number registration.
