About Ente Auth

Ente Auth comes from Ente, the company behind the encrypted Ente Photos service, and has become a common pick for people leaving Authy. Codes sync across every device through end-to-end encrypted backups, and Ente says its cryptography has been independently audited. Unlike most authenticators it runs almost everywhere: Android (including F-Droid), iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux and a web app. You can also use it offline without an account, in which case codes stay on the device. Practical features include showing the next code before the current one expires, icons, tags, notes, pinning favourites, search, and sharing a code with a teammate through an encrypted link. It imports from many other apps, including guides for Authy, Microsoft Authenticator and Steam, and lets you export your data at any time. The app is free, with no paid tier, and is open source under AGPL-3.0, so the sync server can also be self-hosted. Its interface is functional rather than pretty, and syncing does require creating an Ente account.

Best for: People who want encrypted 2FA sync across phone and computer from an open-source app.
