About Proton Authenticator
Proton Authenticator is a standalone two-factor app from Proton, the Swiss company behind Proton Mail, Pass and VPN. Launched in 2025, it is free and open source, and you can start using it without any account, phone number or email address. If you sign in with a Proton account, codes sync across devices with end-to-end encryption, and you can also make encrypted backups. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, Android, Windows and Linux, which is wider desktop coverage than most rivals, and codes work offline. Everyday touches include biometric unlock, search, custom icons and showing the next code before the current one expires. You can import codes from other authenticator apps when switching. Proton already includes TOTP codes in Proton Pass, so the separate app mainly appeals to people who want 2FA kept apart from their password manager. As a newer app, it has fewer advanced organisation features than long-running tools like Aegis, and sync requires a Proton account.
Best for: People who want free encrypted 2FA sync on phone and desktop from a privacy-focused company.
