About Dayflow

Dayflow is an automatic time tracker for the Mac that works more like a work journal. It records your screen in the background, then uses an AI model to turn those recordings into a readable timeline of what you were doing, with categories such as coding, research or distraction, plus daily and weekly summaries you can use for standups. There are no timers to start or tags to assign. Recordings and the database stay on your Mac. For the analysis you choose: a local model through Ollama or LM Studio keeps everything on the device, your own Gemini, OpenAI or Anthropic key sends selected screenshots to that provider, or the paid Pro plan handles the AI for you. The app is open source under the MIT licence and free to use with local models or your own keys; an Enterprise tier adds SSO and retention controls. It needs macOS 14 or later, and a Windows version is only on a waitlist so far.

Best for: Mac knowledge workers who want an automatic, private log of their day without manual timers.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Writes a narrative timeline instead of raw app-usage charts
  • Recordings stay local, with a fully on-device AI option
  • Free and open source under MIT
  • Daily summaries make status updates quick

Why people leave

  • Mac only for now; Windows is waitlisted
  • Accuracy depends on the AI model, and local models are less detailed
  • Continuous screen recording may not suit every workplace policy
