About Kimai
Kimai is an open-source web application for tracking time by customer, project and activity. It supports any number of users with roles and teams, timesheets with timers or manual entry, billable rates, budgets, exports, and invoices generated from templates, plus working-time accounts, public holidays and expenses on higher cloud plans. A plugin marketplace extends it with features such as approvals and custom fields, and there is a JSON API. You can install it on your own server with Docker or manually, completely free under the AGPL 3 licence, or pay per user for Kimai Cloud, which is hosted in Germany and GDPR compliant, with a 30-day free trial. The project is made in Austria and has been around for many years. As a browser-based tool its interface is functional rather than slick, and self-hosting means you look after updates and backups, but few tools give you this much control over time data.
Best for: Teams that want to own their time data on their own server, or in EU hosting.
