About Filen
Filen is a cloud storage service run from Germany that encrypts everything on the client with a zero-knowledge design. All of its apps are open source, and it covers more ground than you might expect from a small provider: desktop sync, a mounted network drive, a command-line tool, encrypted notes and encrypted chat. Servers are located in Germany and the company operates under German and EU data protection law. Plans are priced in euros and are among the cheapest encrypted options, starting with a free tier, then monthly or annual Pro tiers, with occasional lifetime offers. Apps cover Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and the web. As a small team, it has fewer collaboration features than Dropbox or Google Drive, and some users report the desktop client can be heavy on resources with very large libraries.
Best for: Budget-minded users who want encrypted storage and open-source clients.
