About GitHub Pages
GitHub Pages publishes static websites directly from a GitHub repository. You can serve files from a branch or build the site with a GitHub Actions workflow, which means any static site generator such as Jekyll, Hugo, Astro or Docusaurus works. Each user and organisation gets one main site at username.github.io plus unlimited project sites, with custom domains and free HTTPS. It is the default home for open-source project documentation, personal sites and portfolios, and it is free for public repositories on all plans, with private-repository publishing on paid GitHub plans. There are deliberate limits: sites are static only with no server-side code, published sites can be at most 1 GB, bandwidth has a soft monthly limit and builds are rate limited. GitHub's terms also say Pages is not meant for running an online business, e-commerce site or commercial SaaS. For anything needing functions, forms or previews per pull request, a dedicated host is a better fit.
Best for: Developers publishing docs, portfolios or project sites from a GitHub repository.
