About Railway

Railway is a deployment platform known for its visual project canvas, where services, databases and volumes appear as connected blocks. You deploy from a GitHub repository, a Docker image or one of many community templates, and Railway builds the app, provisions Postgres, MySQL, Redis or MongoDB in a click, and wires up environment variables and private networking between services. Pull request environments, cron jobs, volumes and multi-region deployments are built in. Billing is by actual CPU, memory, storage and egress used, with plans that set a minimum monthly usage: new users start with a 30-day trial with free credits, then a very low-cost plan with small resource limits; Hobby and Pro plans include monthly usage credit equal to their minimum. This suits side projects and startups whose services idle much of the time, though steady heavy workloads can cost more than fixed-price servers. It is managed from the web dashboard and a CLI, with an MCP server for coding agents.

Best for: Developers and small teams who want to deploy apps and databases quickly with usage billing.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Visual canvas makes multi-service projects easy to understand
  • One-click databases and many templates
  • Pay only for resources actually used

Why people leave

  • Trial credits run out quickly for always-on apps
  • Usage billing is less predictable than fixed plans
  • Fewer compliance options than the big clouds
