About Icinga
Icinga began in 2009 as a fork of Nagios and has since been rewritten into its own platform. Icinga 2 is the monitoring core, with a declarative configuration language, built-in clustering for distributed setups and a REST API, while Icinga Web provides dashboards, problem views and modules for business processes, reporting, certificate monitoring and integrations with configuration management tools. It stays compatible with the huge library of Nagios-style check plugins, so existing checks carry over. Icinga suits organisations that want full control over on-premises monitoring and like automating configuration through code or tools like Ansible and Puppet. It needs more planning and Linux administration than hosted tools, and graphs usually come from an add-on time series backend. The software is free and open source under the GPL, and Icinga GmbH sells subscriptions with support and enterprise add-ons. It runs on Linux, with agents for Windows.
Best for: Linux-savvy teams that want scriptable, distributed on-premises monitoring.
