About Sentry

Sentry is the error tracker many developers reach for first. Its SDKs for JavaScript, Python, Ruby, Go, Java, mobile platforms and many frameworks capture exceptions with stack traces, breadcrumbs, release and user context, then group them into issues you can assign and resolve. Over time it has grown into tracing, session replay, logs, profiling, cron and uptime monitoring, plus an AI assistant called Seer that suggests fixes. It stays developer-centric: issues link to commits and releases, and alerts can go to Slack or your issue tracker. The hosted service has a free plan for one user and usage-based paid tiers billed by errors, spans and replays. The source code is available under the Functional Source License, which turns into Apache 2.0 after two years, and a Docker-based self-hosted package exists for low-volume use, though running it is fairly heavy.

Best for: Development teams that want detailed error reports tied to releases and code.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Rich error context with stack traces, breadcrumbs and releases
  • SDKs for almost every language and framework
  • Free plan for solo developers

Why people leave

  • Self-hosted package needs many containers and a lot of memory
  • Usage-based quotas can be confusing to tune
  • Source-available licence rather than OSI open source
