About Jaeger
Jaeger is an open-source backend for distributed tracing. Services instrumented with OpenTelemetry send spans to Jaeger, which stores them in a backend of your choice such as Cassandra, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Badger or, more recently, ClickHouse, and lets you search traces, view request timelines and examine service dependency graphs to find where latency and errors come from. Version 2 rebuilt Jaeger on top of the OpenTelemetry Collector, making it simpler to deploy alongside other telemetry pipelines. It is a graduated project of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation and is widely used in Kubernetes environments, often with Prometheus for metrics and Grafana for dashboards. It only handles traces, so you need other tools for metrics, logs and alerting, and its UI is functional rather than analytical. It is free under the Apache 2.0 licence and runs as containers or binaries on Linux, macOS, Windows and Kubernetes.
Best for: Kubernetes teams that want free, self-hosted distributed tracing.
