About LimeSurvey
LimeSurvey is a German open-source survey tool that has been used in academic, government and market research for many years. It is built for serious questionnaires: dozens of question types, complex branching and expressions, quotas, randomisation, token-based participant management for invitations and reminders, and support for surveys in many languages at once. Results can be exported to SPSS, R, Excel and other formats. The Community Edition is free to download and run on your own PHP server under a GPL licence, which is why universities and public bodies use it to keep data in-house. LimeSurvey also sells hosted cloud plans with data centres in several countries and support; the pricing page shows prices in the visitor's local currency. The trade-off is usability: the interface is functional but dated and has a learning curve, and the default survey themes look plain without some customisation. It runs in the browser.
Best for: Researchers, universities and public bodies running complex surveys on their own servers.
