About Microsoft Entra ID

Microsoft Entra ID, previously called Azure Active Directory, is the identity service behind every Microsoft 365 and Azure tenant. It stores users and groups, signs people into Microsoft and third-party apps with single sign-on, enforces MFA and Conditional Access policies, and syncs with on-premises Active Directory for hybrid setups. A free edition comes with Microsoft cloud subscriptions, while the P1 and P2 tiers add Conditional Access, risk-based protection and privileged identity management; P1 is bundled in Microsoft 365 Business Premium and E3. The wider Entra family also covers customer identity through External ID, plus private access and governance products. For companies already on Microsoft 365 it is often the default choice because much of it is already paid for. The admin experience is spread across several portals and licensing can be hard to follow, and it is less neutral if your apps mostly live outside Microsoft's world.

Best for: Organisations on Microsoft 365 or Azure that want SSO and MFA without another vendor.
