About ownCloud

ownCloud is one of the original self-hosted file sync projects (Nextcloud forked from it in 2016). Its current platform, ownCloud Infinite Scale, is a rewrite in Go that drops the old PHP and database stack in favour of a microservices design, with Spaces for team folders, fast search and integrations with Microsoft Office Online, Collabora and OnlyOffice. The older ownCloud 10 server is still offered. The company is now part of Kiteworks, which runs an open-source programme office for the project, and ownCloud is aimed mostly at businesses, research institutions and service providers rather than home users. The community edition is free to self-host; enterprise subscriptions and a hosted ownCloud online service add support. Desktop clients run on Windows, macOS and Linux with iOS and Android apps. Compared with Nextcloud it has fewer bundled apps but a leaner, file-focused core.

Best for: Organisations wanting a lean, scalable self-hosted file platform.
