About S3Drive

S3Drive is a storage client rather than a storage company: you point it at an S3-compatible bucket (AWS, Backblaze B2, Wasabi, Cloudflare R2, self-hosted MinIO) or at one of rclone's many back-ends, and it gives you a Dropbox-like drive on top. Files are encrypted on your device before upload, using rclone's open encryption scheme, so the data stays readable with rclone even without S3Drive. Apps run on Android, iOS, the desktop and in the browser, with photo backup, folder sync, mounting the bucket as a drive, versioning, search and encrypted share links that decrypt in the recipient's browser. Because you bring the storage, you pay the provider's own rates, or you can buy storage from S3Drive. The basic client is free; a yearly or lifetime licence unlocks drive mounting, all sync modes, background backup and the wider back-end list, with a separate business tier for commercial use. The client itself is closed source. It suits people who want encrypted, cheap object storage without being tied to one cloud drive vendor.

Best for: People who want an encrypted drive on top of cheap S3 storage or their own server.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Works with any S3-compatible provider or self-hosted MinIO
  • Client-side encryption compatible with rclone, so no lock-in
  • Apps for phones, desktops and the browser
  • Free basic tier; storage costs are paid straight to your provider

Why people leave

  • The client is closed source
  • Drive mount, full sync modes and background backup need a paid licence
  • You have to set up and pay for storage separately unless you buy theirs
