About Snapmaker Orca

Snapmaker Orca is Snapmaker's own slicer, built on the open-source OrcaSlicer and adjusted for the company's 3D printers. It keeps OrcaSlicer's slicing engine, calibration tools and project workflow, and adds profiles for Snapmaker machines plus remote monitoring and control of a connected printer, so you can send jobs and watch progress from the same window. The headline addition is Full Spectrum, a mode that mixes four loaded filaments to produce a wider range of colours on the Snapmaker U1 toolchanger. Snapmaker says the app is optimized for the U1 for now, with direct machine connection for its older Artisan, 2.0 and J1 printers still to come; owners of those machines may be better served by Snapmaker Luban or plain OrcaSlicer today. It is free, open source under the AGPL, and available for Windows and Mac. It mainly makes sense for Snapmaker owners; anyone with another brand of printer will get more from upstream OrcaSlicer.

Best for: Snapmaker U1 owners who want an OrcaSlicer-based slicer with printer control built in.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Free and open source, inheriting OrcaSlicer's slicing features
  • Remote monitoring and control of Snapmaker printers from the slicer
  • Full Spectrum colour mixing for the four-head U1

Why people leave

  • Currently optimized for the U1; older Snapmaker machines lack direct connection
  • No Linux build offered on the download page
  • Little reason to use it over upstream OrcaSlicer for other printer brands
