About StreetEasy

StreetEasy is the main property search site for New York City, covering rentals and homes for sale across the five boroughs plus nearby New Jersey towns such as Jersey City and Hoboken. It is built around how New Yorkers actually search: filters for pets, doormen and elevators, pages for individual buildings and new developments, neighbourhood guides, and detailed market data and reports. Buyers and sellers can be matched with licensed agents from partner brokerages through its Experts programme, which earns StreetEasy a referral fee rather than charging the user, and owners can list rentals or sales themselves. Searching is free on the web and in the iOS and Android apps; the business is paid for by listing fees and agent advertising. It is a Zillow brand, so its listings overlap with Zillow's but the tools are tuned to the NYC market. If you are not looking in the New York area, it is of little use, and a national portal will serve you better.

Best for: Anyone renting, buying or selling a home in New York City or nearby New Jersey.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Filters built for NYC, such as doorman, elevator and pets
  • Building pages, market data and neighbourhood guides
  • Free to search, with owner listings allowed

Why people leave

  • Only covers the New York City area and parts of New Jersey
  • Many rentals are still listed by brokers who may charge fees
  • Agent matching is a referral programme, not neutral advice
