About Zillow

Zillow is the best-known place to look for a home in the United States. Its website and apps cover homes for sale, rentals, recently sold homes and new construction, and every house gets a Zestimate, an automated estimate of its value. Beyond search, Zillow tries to handle the whole move: it connects buyers with local agents from its Premier Agent network, offers loans through Zillow Home Loans, and lets renters apply, sign leases and pay rent online. Landlords can list rentals and collect rent through Zillow Rental Manager. Searching and using the apps costs nothing; Zillow earns its money mainly from agents, lenders and property managers who pay for leads and advertising. That model is the main thing to know: the agent you are put in touch with is usually a paying partner, not a neutral pick. Zillow focuses on the US housing market and runs on the web, iOS and Android.

Best for: US home buyers and renters who want the widest listing coverage and quick value estimates.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Very wide coverage of US homes for sale and for rent
  • Zestimate gives a quick starting point for any home's value
  • Renters can apply, sign leases and pay rent in one place
  • Free tools for small landlords, including online rent collection

Why people leave

  • Agents you are matched with are usually paying Zillow partners
  • Zestimates can be far off for unusual or rural homes
  • Mostly limited to the United States
