About Teleport

Teleport gives engineers one way to reach infrastructure: SSH servers, Kubernetes clusters, databases, Windows desktops and internal web apps. Instead of handing out long-lived SSH keys and database passwords, it issues short-lived certificates tied to a user's identity provider login, and it records sessions so security teams have an audit trail. Access requests let people ask for elevated rights for a limited time, which is the core of its just-in-time, zero-standing-privilege pitch. Teleport Connect is the desktop app that wraps the tsh command-line client in a GUI on macOS, Windows and Linux. The project is open source on GitHub, and a Community Edition can be self-hosted for small setups; larger companies buy Teleport Enterprise, either as a managed cloud or self-hosted, with pricing on request after a free trial. It suits platform and DevOps teams who want to replace bastion hosts and VPN-based access with something auditable, though running and tuning it takes real infrastructure work.

Best for: Platform teams replacing SSH keys, bastion hosts and VPNs with audited, short-lived access.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Short-lived certificates replace static SSH keys and database passwords
  • Covers SSH, Kubernetes, databases, RDP and web apps in one tool
  • Session recording and access requests built in
  • Open-source code with a self-hostable Community Edition

Why people leave

  • Enterprise pricing is only available by contacting sales
  • Self-hosting a cluster takes real setup and upkeep
  • Community Edition lacks many enterprise governance features
