About Afterpay
Afterpay lets shoppers split a purchase at partner retailers into four instalments, with the first paid at checkout and the rest roughly every two weeks, so the whole amount is paid over about six weeks. Pay in 4 is interest-free at partner brands; Afterpay earns most of its money from merchant fees, and charges late fees if a payment is missed, with a cap on how much those can add up to. Some longer plans with a finance fee are also offered to eligible US customers. The app doubles as a shopping directory, lets you reschedule payment dates, and can add a digital Afterpay Card to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet for in-store purchases. Afterpay is owned by Block, the company behind Square and Cash App, and operates in the US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the UK (where it is called Clearpay). It is free to sign up and works on the web and through Android and iOS apps.
Best for: Shoppers who want to split smaller purchases into four interest-free payments at popular retailers.
Pros and cons
What works
- Pay in 4 has no interest at partner brands
- Late fees are capped rather than open-ended
- Digital card works in stores through Apple Wallet and Google Wallet
- Payment dates can be rescheduled in the app
Why people leave
- Only works at participating retailers or through the in-app card
- Missed payments bring late fees and can pause your account
- Longer monthly plans carry a finance fee and are not available to everyone
