About FusionPBX
FusionPBX is an open-source web interface and feature set that turns FreeSWITCH into a complete business phone system. From a browser, admins create extensions, ring groups, IVR menus, call-centre queues, voicemail-to-email, call recording, conferencing and phone provisioning, without editing FreeSWITCH's XML by hand, while still being able to drop to the FreeSWITCH command line when needed. It is multi-tenant, so one server can host separate phone systems for many companies, which makes it popular with VoIP resellers and managed service providers. It is self-hosted, typically on Debian or Ubuntu using the project's install script, and the software itself is free; the project funds itself through paid training, memberships and support. The interface is functional rather than polished, and there are no official desktop or mobile softphone apps, so users pair it with third-party SIP phones and softphones.
Best for: VoIP resellers and IT teams who want a self-hosted, multi-tenant PBX without per-user licences..
Pros and cons
What works
- Full web admin over FreeSWITCH, with direct CLI access still available
- Multi-tenant by design, suited to hosting phone systems for many customers
- Long feature list including queues, IVRs, recording and phone provisioning
Why people leave
- Self-hosting means you handle security, firewalls and upgrades
- No official softphone apps; relies on third-party SIP clients
- Admin interface is dense and dated compared with commercial systems
