About Dataform
Dataform is Google Cloud's tool for managing the transformation step inside BigQuery. You write tables, views and assertions in SQLX, an extension of SQL, and can use JavaScript to generate repetitive code. Dataform compiles the project to standard SQL, resolves dependencies between tables, and runs them in order, with data quality tests along the way. Work happens in a browser-based development workspace in the Google Cloud console, and each repository can link to GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket or Azure DevOps for version control. Runs can be scheduled from Dataform itself or triggered from tools such as Cloud Composer. It is aimed at analysts and analytics engineers whose data already sits in BigQuery. Dataform itself has no charge; you pay for the BigQuery queries it runs and any other Google Cloud services involved. Its core compiler and CLI are open source under Apache 2.0, but the managed service only targets BigQuery, so it is not a fit for teams on Snowflake or Redshift.
